EVERYONE NEEDS TO EAT

Food is a powerful common denominator that each day brings the world together around a figurative table...a table that is currently a cockeyed mess.

  • One in ten of us goes hungry

  • Nearly half of childhood deaths are related to poor nutrition

  • Obesity is neither a simple measure of gluttony nor one's privileged place at the table, but the result of a gumbo of lousy government policies, corporate greed, poverty, unsafe neighborhoods, bad food, depression and emotional overload.

WHAT TO DO?

In 1995 Katherine learned first-hand about Community Food Security when neighbors took back a desolate 1/2-acre inner-city vacant lot around the corner from her house in Omaha.  The neighborhood was reeling from a drive-by shooting on the lot -- one of three nearby murders in as many weeks. Hoping to turn things right again they transformed the lot into City Sprouts, a thriving community garden.

Within months there was more to harvest than just food: neighbors became friends, they linked with farmers outside the city...and with the Community Food Security movement that was germinating miracles like City Sprouts around the globe.

Several years later Katherine left Omaha and academia to advocate for community food security and urban agriculture. As Southside Community Land Trust's executive director she helped Providence develop new gardens and farms for thousands of families to grow healthy food and community.

COMMUNITY FOOD SECURITY seeks to revitalize and connect all sectors of the local food system so everyone has access to healthy food.  Access means food is readily available nearby, affordable, and a cultural fit.

Inspired by the healing powers of urban agriculture Katherine's novel The Sweet Folly of Hope tells the story of how a city garden turns everything around for a delightful but troubled family.
